Hang on a minute, most of the fairy tale references in Shrek are from the brothers Grimm, and the setting looks a lot like the Black Forest. What if the characters are supposed to be speaking German the whole time?

If that’s the case, then maybe Shrek never had a real name, he just called himself the same thing the locals called him.
