instead of assuring everyone that it “isn’t a phase”, why don’t we just assure everyone that if it is a phase it’s fine? it’s healthy to figure yourself out? because if we tell everyone it’s not a phase and it ends up being a phase, those people are going to feel guilty, like they stole resources or wasted time. It’s not bad to ‘go through a phase’. It’s a healthy way of finding out who you are. And if it isn’t a phase, that’s fine too. But if it is, there’s no reason to feel bad.

a parent of a bi kid once asked me about phase stuff, and probably the best impromptu bullshit-turned-actually-good-metaphor popped out of my mouth:
Ice is a phase of water.
Some ice is going to be in the center of an iceberg for thousands of years. Some ice is going to be a slick patch on the ground for only a couple of hours. Some ice is going to be water and then water vapor and then a cloud and then snow, repeat twice, all in one month. All of that is natural.
But the important thing is to treat ice as ice when it is ice, because doing otherwise can literally end lives. Nobody looks at an icy street and thinks “Oh, it’ll just go back to being water soon, so I’ll just treat it like it already has.”
